ANTHONY MANTHA - Right Winger - 24 - $3.3MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/5/19
After his absolutely disgusting goal-per-game final season (and playoffs!) in the QMJHL, Anthony Mantha made his professional debut with much fanfare. While he didn't have the immediate NHL impact many expected, taking two more seasons before really cementing himself as an NHL regular, Mantha seems to finally be realizing his long-held offensive upside. On paper, his most recent season may not seem to be tat much of an improvement. His point production didn't change, and he only scored one more goal. But over the course of the season Mantha battled injuries and only played in 67 games rather than 80 the season prior, making his production less of a 48 point season and more of a 60 point pace season. Mantha has one of the game's elite shots, with a lethal shooter's instinct and the elite size and strength to hold on to the puck through traffic. Despite being six-foot-five and 225 pounds, Mantha is still a strong skater with decent speed. He's not a burner, but he's also not a late-career Jagr-level lumbering sloth. He's a capable playmaker, though he has definite shoot-first instincts and should not be relied on as a play driver, as he's a far better trigger man for a pass-first center. Defensively, Mantha has the size and strength to be a major asset in front of the net and in the corners, reliably able to win battles for pucks, but he's not a shut down force and should not be on the ice in high leverage defensive situations. Mantha's isolated impact metrics are incredibly strong measuring him as an elite shooter with very strong offensive impacts and a major positive play driver on the power play. A constant trend with Mantha is the high volume of net-front quality scoring chances that he generates, a testament to his size's value in front of the net. Going forward, Mantha should blossom into a true first line sniper and should score 30-35 goals consistently as he gets into his prime.
