ANDY GREENE - Defenseman - 36 - $5.00MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Andy Greene, a Devil since 2006-2007, isn't quite what he once was but he's still a serviceable defensive defenseman. Greene plays a rugged, stay-at-home style that allows him to make the most of his size and strength while also covering up for his lack of top-end foot speed and puck moving abilities. Greene is smart and physical, and his willingness to do what it takes to keep the puck out of the net makes him a good penalty killer. Greene has anchored the Devils' penalty kill for a long time and should continue to do so until he hangs them up. Offensively, Greene is a very weak player but thanks to his usage and his shot he can still produce 20 points once in a few seasons. He's a capable #4 defenseman who provides penalty killing, diligent defense, and leadership to a young Devils defense, and should help balance an offensively-focused partner (Subban?) if that's how coach Hynes chooses to utilize him.
