ANDREW MANGIAPANE - Left Winger - 23 - $.715MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 6/29/19
A skill player by nature, Mangiapane was able to score incredibly well in the OHL and in the AHL. His point-per-game scoring rates at those lower levels did not translate to NHL success, raising questions about his upside as more than just a Seth Griffith-esque AAAA player. His skill is definitely there, and he has the smarts and playmaking ability to be a factor. But his lack of size causes him to lose many a board battle, and he also does not have the skating ability to create enough time and space for himself with the puck to create plays. That's his most crucial flaw, and if he cannot improve his skating or make himself stronger on the puck, he simply will not be able to have enough room with the puck to translate his AHL numbers into NHL success. He'll need top-9 minutes at the very least to stick in the NHL, because he isn't physical enough to stick in a defensive role, but he isn't consistent enough to be deserving of those minutes, but he also has proven everything he can at the AHL level. It'll probably take a rebuilding club willing to feed Mangiapane minutes just to see if that upside is there for Mangiapane to experience a breakout, and that likely will not be in Calgary. He's in a tough spot right now. At this point, he's more of a AAAA player than anything, but his record shows that he does have upside to be more than that.
