ANDREW LADD - Left Winger - 33 - $5.5MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2023-24
LAST UPDATED 12/30/18
After winning a Stanley Cup in Chicago and having moderate success as Winnipeg's captain, Ladd was rewarded with a massive contract by former GM Garth Snow, and he has since failed to live up to his lofty cap hit. In Winnipeg, Ladd was typically good for ~25 goals, ~50 points, and he tended to stay healthy and play close to a full season. Since arriving in New York, though, Ladd has had no such success and he now finds himself an aging player on an albatross contract. While he found some of his prior form in his first year with the Isles, scoring 23 goals, he had only 32 points and his all around game regressed. Formerly an imposing power forward, Ladd's defensive game has taken a step back, and he's gotten slower and less scrappy. He still possesses a good shot, but he's less able to get into good positions to actually use it. He's very much a complementary player now, and he needs a strong playmaker to provide him with chances he can finish. At this point, he's a middle-6 power forward who should stay off of special teams and be with playmaking linemates. In a vacuum, that kind of player holds value, but given his contract, Ladd is undoubtably a negative-value asset, and unfortunately, as he heads deeper and deeper into his 30's, Ladd is only set to regress further.
