ANDREW COPP - Center - 25 - $2.28MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 9/1/19
Since breaking in as an NHL regular at 21, Andrew Copp has impressed Jets fans with his mature approach to the game and his unending motor on the ice. While Copp isn't the most skilled player, he's gotten this far in his career thanks to his pure will to win hockey games, and it's his superb work ethic that drives most of his value. He can't thread the needle to make some insane passes, he won't pick off a corner or be a triggerman for a power play, and he certainly won't drive his line's offense. He just lacks the offensive skill to do that. That being said, Copp's energy and motor do allow him to produce sporadically. Where there's a loose puck in the offensive zone, you won't find Copp too far away. He's always willing to do his part to re-establish possession of the puck, and his work along the boards and in front of the net has real offensive value, even if it doesn't have a high ceiling. Defensively, Copp's attitude and work ethic drive his value. He can capably block shots, stay positionally sound in his own end, and suffocate a puck carrier. He's not an elite shutdown force, but he can be a quality penalty killer and make a real defensive impact. Overall, Copp is a strong defensive forward with a lot of energy and punch, making him a good fit on a third line as a two-way LW with some offensive linemates or as a 4C who anchors a second PK unit.
