ANDREJ SEKERA - Defenseman - 33 - $5.50MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/6/19
Because he tore his Achilles last season, Sekera only played in 24 games and was eventually bought out of his large contract by the Oilers. Sekera then caught on with the Dallas Stars, who are undoubtedly hoping that Sekera can bounce back to his pre-injury form. Pre-injuries, Sekera was a reliable puck moving defenseman, able to use his good mobility and vision to be an asset in transition, as well as being able to put up points in the mid-30's. Unfortunately, though, Achilles tendons are catastrophic injuries, and as Sekera showed this past season in Edmonton, he simply was not even close to the skater he used to be. For a defender with only mediocre defensive ability, his skating was the trait he relied on to be an effective puck mover. Now that his skating ability has heavily regressed, I doubt Sekera will be able to be an effective NHL defenseman. He's experienced enough and smart enough to hold his own defensively, but if he's such a liability with the puck on his stick is putting him into the lineup nightly a good idea? Given his injuries and ineffectiveness, Sekera is an aging bottom-pairing defenseman (at best) with some bounce-back potential if Dallas can figure out how to restore his physical abilities to their pre-injury state.
