ANDREI SVECHNIKOV - Right Winger - 19 - $.925MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2021-2022

Given that he plays in Carolina and given the insane success of recent NHL rookies like Patrik Laine and Auston Matthews, I think that Andrei Svechnikov's quietly brilliant rookie season flew under the radar. Despite "only" scoring 20 goals and 37 points as a rookie, Andrei Svechnikov is still the elite offensive talent that made him the second overall pick. Svechnikov has an elite shot, lethal offensive instincts, great skating abilities, and a rare willingness to do whatever it takes to win battles for someone with his skill level. These tools didn't translate into immediate elite NHL production, but elite levels of scoring are not too far off. Isolated impact metrics paint the picture of Svechnikov as that elite offensive scorer already, as they say he's a MASSIVE positive play driver on offense, even if those chances didn't always show up on the box score. I believe those analytics, and if Svechnikov's play in the OHL said anything, it's that Svechnikov is going to score 40 or 50 goals sooner rather than later. While Svechnikov is more physical that people generally give him credit for, and challenging players to fights is not something that's typical of a skill player like Svechnikov, yet he still does it, Svechnikov's defensive game still could improve. He lacks the positioning ability to make an impact as a shutdown winger, and I think that his aggressive offensive style will keep him from ever taking on many two-way responsibilities. That all being said, Svechnikov is a legitimate top-6 scoring winger with some sandpaper to his game, with the potential to be an elite, Panarin-esque play-driving winger.
