ANDONG SONG - Defenseman - 21 - Drafted 2015 #172 Overall
LAST UPDATED 1/29/19
Despite making history as the first Chinese born and raised player to be drafted by an NHL franchise, AnDong Song does not look to be a legitimate prospect at this point. While he doesn't have any specific glaring flaws in his game, the entirety of his skill set is too mediocre for him to be counted on as anything more than organizational filler. (if he's tendered a contract, which is unlikely) With only three points in his entire 100 game USHL career, his offensive tools are not nearly refined enough for him to be viable going forward. His defense is also poor, and in the minutes he does get he looks like he's always chasing the game instead of being an impactful presence in it. With hands of stone and awkward skating, it's doubtful that Song will have a very long career in hockey. The reality is that being a 20 year-old depth defenseman in the USHL is a terrible place to be for any prospect drafted by an NHL team. Without seeming too negative, Song could realistically speaking be the worst prospect ever drafted by an NHL team.
