McShane is a smart two-way center who uses his good instincts and strong shot to overcome his mediocre skating to create offense. His speed is above-average, but it takes time for him to reach that speed and his burst and edge work are sub-par. He's a very shifty player, and he needs to bulk up as he progresses through OHL hockey. He has a quick release, and his wrist shot is nearly NHL-quality. He's a hard worker, and is quite responsible defensively. If he can improve his skating and bulk up, he can be a reliable middle-6 center in the NHL, but that's obviously not a guarantee given his shortcomings.
