ALEXANDER STEEN - Left Winger - 35 - $5.75MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Alex Steen has been a steady contributor for St. Louis for the past decade, but he's starting to show signs of age. Offensively, Steen has regressed. His 27 points this past season are a far cry from the high-40's to low-60's he's used to. Steen's burst and jump has taken a hit with age, and as a result it's more difficult for him to get out of the scoring slumps that he goes through. His shot is still fine and he's still got killer offensive instincts, but he just has games where the offense isn't on for him and those games are becoming more frequent. Defensively, Steen is still a rock. I mean that in a good way. Steen's brain is still just as strong as it was when he was a teenager, and he has incredible defensive instincts and plays with incredible pace and urgency. He reads and reacts to the play in the defensive zone quickly, and his awareness, defensive stick, and positional coverage skills allow him to be a major asset on the PK. Steen is still a high-end defensive winger, and that will carry his value even if he's not scoring. If his offense doesn't recover to the 40 point range Steen will still be a valuable defensive specialist for the bottom-6, but if he can rediscover his offensive touch he could re-establish himself as a core cog in the St. Louis Blues machine.
