ALEXANDER NYLANDER - Left Winger - 21 - $.863MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 6/25/19
The brother of Toronto star William Nylander, Alex Nylander has thus far greatly disappointed in his professional career. He looked decent this past season in the AHL, but nothing he did made the case to Buffalo that he needed to be called up immediately, he instead just looked like a fine AHL top-6 winger. Before this past season he'd struggled to score at all in the AHL. All that being said, though, Nylander still does have that raw upside that made him such a high draft pick. He's a slippery skater with the puck and possesses great hands. He's a playmaker by nature but has a decent shot, and should be at least a 20 goal scorer. He needs to develop chemistry with a shooting center or a winger on his line to truly make the best out of his abilities, because his playmaking skill sometimes causes him to overcomplicate plays on the ice. His defense is still a work in progress and he sometimes looks lost in his own end, whereas other times he'll demonstrate exceptional stick skills and positioning. For him, it's about consistency, as well as learning to be more physical, because right now he isn't strong enough to win board battles with any manner of regularity and will need that strength to improve his puck control abilities on offense. Nylander looks like a player who could end up being the bust many people consider him to already be, but he also could harness his potential and break out as a top-6 NHL playmaker. It's really up to him.
