Galchenyuk, a polarizing player throughout his career, has disappointed given his lofty draft status but seemed to find his place in his first season in Arizona. During his tenure in Montreal, Galchenyuk always flashed elite offensive ability, but he battled with coaches and his inability to stick at the center position eroded his reputation with fans. Galchenyuk has a lethal shot, incredible playmaking abilities, and genuine high-end offensive upside. He's scored 30 goals before, and could score that many goals again in the right situation. With his incredible offensive abilities, though, come similarly incredible faults. Galchenyuk has work ethic issues, and is an outright liability on defense. He has shown an unwillingness to play the defensive side of the center position, and cannot be counted on to take on tough defensive matchups. This lack of defensive ability is what kept him away from the center position in Montreal, and also why he battled with upper management there too. His "attitude" issues, as Marc Bergevin would put it, are what drove him out of Montreal, and his replacement, Max Domi, despite being less naturally gifted as an offensive talent, found significantly more success than Galchenyuk did due to his superb work ethic and willingness to play a hard-nosed game. Going forward, Galchenyuk still has tremendous value as a Kovalchuk-esque offense-only winger, and given his immense talent Galchenyuk should become a true first-line winger. But, as long as teams still view him as a center, Galchenyuk will never be able to reach that upside. Teams need to acknowledge his warts and coaches need to learn to work around them in order to get the most out of Galchenyuk.
