ALEX EDLER - Defenseman - 33 - $6.00MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/28/19
A defensive anchor for Vancouver since even before their run to the Stanley Cup finals in 2011, Alex Edler is one of the most beloved figures among Canucks fans. He's brought consistent, flashy, exciting play to the Nucks' blueline for over a decade. Now 33, Edler isn't quite what he once was, but that's okay, because he's still a very valuable defenseman. He's a smooth, effortless skater with great on-ice vision and an eye for getting his teammates the puck. He's a major asset in the transition game, and can be a real help to a team's zone entry and zone exit efforts. That means that, despite Edler's lack of a physical side to his game and his inability to kill penalties, Edler is still a plus defensive defender, because his speed and puck moving abilities allows him to move the puck from his own end out of it, thereby killing any scoring chances that may come about on that shift. Edler needs to be able to stay healthy to really bring as much value to the Canucks as he can, and he's struggled to do so throughout his career. Still, when healthy, Edler is a smooth-skating #3 defenseman who can be the offensive end of a lethal 1-2 punch on a team's second pairing.
