ALEX DeBRINCAT - Right Winger - 21 - $6.40MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2023-2024
LAST UPDATED 7/25/19
Alex DeBrincat's fall to the second round and subsequent success is why a player like the five-foot-seven Cole Caufield can get drafted in the first round. DeBrincat is just as short as Caufield, but he doesn't show it on the ice. He's an insanely skilled offensive weapon with strong skating, puck skills, and a lethal shot. He's shown the ability to sustain a ridiculously high shooting percentage, and while isolated impact metrics are decently low on Debrincat's overall play driving talent, they do measure DeBrincat as one of the NHL's best shots. When paired with a playmaker like Patrick Kane, we see what DeBrincat can do, and with a 40 goal season under his belt already despite being only 21 years old, a potential 50 goal season for him is not out of the question. That all being said, despite how immensely talented DeBrincat may be on the offensive side of the puck, his defensive talent is not nearly as strong. His lack of size is an issue, and he simply cannot win battles for pucks consistently enough to be anything but a liability defensively. He's a smart player, and I have no doubt that he'll improve his defensive game as his career goes on, but as of right now he's an offense-only winger, though an elite, sniping offense-only first line winger.
