Chiasson is another product of Edmonton's ability to turn mediocre power forwards into somewhat promising-looking scoring forwards. Chiasson, before this past season, was a depth forward at best. He owned a big, strong body, and typically drew into NHL lineups through his ability to throw that body around and win battles in the corners and generally just play a bottom-6 power forward role. But as the game got faster Chiasson began to fall behind, and he relied on a PTO with the Washington Capitals to stay in the NHL, eventually winning a cup with them. In Edmonton, Chiasson rode a 17.9% s% and being able to play with McDavid to 22 goals and 38 points, but isolated impact metrics portray Chiasson as a net negative impact player in 5v5 offensive situations. They also portray him as a net negative defensively, and that's supported by scouting as he can win battles in the corners but doesn't have the defensive awareness to be a shutdown force or the foot speed to be an asset on the backcheck. A team will likely take a shot on Chiasson as a UFA trying to score a free (asset-wise) 22 goals, but teams will likely find that Chiasson isn't different from the player he was pre-McDavid, a mediocre bottom-6 power forward who's best on a cap-strapped team providing energy and grit to their fourth line for league-minimum salary.
