ALEC MARTINEZ - Defenseman - 32 - $4MM Cap Hit - 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 6/22/19
While his career may have peaked when he scored the cup-clinching goal in 2014 against the Rangers, Martinez is still a valuable NHL defenseman. He was once able to score 40 points and be an offensive threat, but after some physical regression and the erosion of his offensive tools, Martinez is likely a 20 point producer from the back end at this point. He still has decent puck moving skills and is a strong enough skater to be an asset in transition. He's a defender who's best when he's left unnoticed, who prefers to be a calming, steady presence on the blueline rather than be aggressive to kill chances. Isolated impact metrics paint him as a net positive on a power play and a penalty kill, so he'll still be an asset on special teams, but those overall metrics 5v5 paint him as a declining talent. That being said, given his strengths and simple style, Martinez is a good #4 defenseman with valuable veteran experience.
