ADAM LOWRY - Left Winger - 26 -$2.91MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 9/1/19
Lowry's the kind of player I point to when I talk about players who have successfully adapted their game to the professional level. With a 6-5 frame, Adam Lowry was given some real advantage in his later years of junior hockey. His size allowed him to dominate smaller, younger competition in the WHL, and as a result he had a brilliant final season for the Swift Current Broncos, scoring 88 points. Lowry, along with many NHL scouts, knew his scoring wouldn't fully translate. The scoring opportunities that he was afforded thanks to his physical dominance would evaporate at the professional level, and as a result he needed to adapt how he played to give himself value even if he wasn't scoring. He did exactly that, and he's grown into a massively valuable bottom-six player in Winnipeg. His size and strength gives him great defensive value. He's a force fighting for pucks, and it's incredibly difficult to buy space with the puck when he's shadowing you. In front of the net he's a true defensive savior, and he can anchor a PK as a center. He can also win faceoffs at an elite level, which only further adds to his defensive profile. Offensively, Lowry lacks the skill he needs to be an elite producer. He's not the most amazing skater and generally lacks the killer instinct elite NHL scorers have. That being said, his size gives him great value digging for dumped-in pucks, and his ability as a screener is underrated. He won't score 50 points, but he can make his presence felt and that's all you can ask for from someone so strong defensively, Lowry is an incredible 4C with tremendous defensive value, and some really underrated offensive value to go along with it.
