AARON EKBLAD - Defenseman - 23 - $7.5MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2025-2026
LAST UPDATED 3/5/19
After being the first overall selection in the 2014 NHL draft, Ekblad came into the league with high expectations. As an 18 year old rookie, he scored 39 points and captured the Calder trophy. There seemed to be no ceiling on what he could accomplish. Since then, nagging injury issues and an inconsistent Panthers supporting cast has caused Ekblad's upside to diminish and while he still can be that incredible, all-around #1, he's not yet the perennial Norris threat he was always thought to be. He's still an offensive threat, good for nearly forty points in a full season, and he can hold his own defensively, and coaches agree trusting him with nearly 24 minutes on average per night. At this point, when he's healthy, he's a strong #2 defenseman, and he still has that upside to be a dominant #1 defenseman.
